Talking Heads - This must be the place (Naive Melody)

The head of the design department at my school, David Lustgarten recently reminded me how much I love the Talking Heads. While recently I haven’t been listening to them much, remembering how they all started at RISD, and reflected/created such a neat culture during the CBGB era has made me re listen to all their albums. This must be the place is by far my favorite track. David told me he had too much homework to see them live.

Since I hate doing dishes with a passion equivalent to a fat kid at an all you can eat buffet table, I came up with the following awesome solution:

2 Dishwashers

Before you dismiss me as crazy hear me out.

Once all of your dishes are dirty, put them all in dishwasher #1 and clean them up. Once clean, use each plate / glass / fork etc. as and when you need to and instead of washing it, just put it in dishwasher #2. When all the dishes from #1 have been used and loaded in #2, run the second washer and then repeat the cycle transferring the dishes into dishwasher #1. Plus, this way you never have to put the dishes away.

I even made this diagram to represent the holy cycle.

There you have it. How I am not a millionaire yet is beyond me.

This is They Might Be Giants playing “Doctor Worm,” the openning track of their 1996 album, Severe Tire Damage.

Severe Tire Damage was the first They Might Be Giants album I owned, and I still love a number of songs on it. TMBG often gets pegged as a children’s band, but they have produced so much material that it isn’t really fair. Their music is quirky, and accessible, so it is natural that kids like it, but it also has unconventional instrumentation and complicated chord progressions. If the singer had an incredibly sensitive voice, they’d probably be indie rock heroes.

I completely forgot to mention this short series that was running last week on the New York Times Opinion blog, focused entirely around sleep and insomnia. The link above will take you to all the essays, and they’re all equally worth reading!

While in theory “sleep hygiene” makes sense, in today’s culture, which affords no time for relaxation, it’s hard to put into practice. We’re on the computer at all hours and then we snuggle with our Blackberries. Our kids are even more hyperactive, texting way past their bedtimes, although today even the concept of “bedtime” sounds quaint. To compensate for being so tired in the mornings, they eat caffeinated foods, gulp energy drinks, and pop Adderall and Ritalin…As the anthropologist Matthew Wolf-Meyer notes, “If a society can’t rest, how can it sleep?”
